How happy hour works
- Typical times: about 3 to 6 or 4 to 7 p.m. on weekdays.
- Reverse happy hour: a late-night happy hour, often after 9 or 10 p.m.
- Food deals: half-price or reduced-price appetizers, sliders, flatbreads and bar bites.
- Bar seating only is a common rule. Ask before you sit at a table.
Happy hour rules vary by state
Alcohol laws are set by each state, and a few states ban or restrict happy hour drink discounts. Massachusetts has banned drink discounts since 1984, and Utah, Rhode Island, Vermont, North Carolina and Alaska also prohibit time-limited drink specials. Indiana legalized limited happy hours in 2025. Where drink discounts are not allowed, restaurants often run food-only happy hours instead. Check local rules if you are traveling.
Drink responsibly and never drink and drive. Use a rideshare or designated driver.
